Chia-Hung Chen & team’s new method for 3D bioprinting receives widespread interest from the 3D printing industry

“A pioneering new technique is currently being trialled for 3D bio-printing, which has the potential to revolutionize the way biological tissues are engineered.”
BIGHEART PI Chia-Hung Chen team’s work with Wei-Chuan Shih recently published in Small; “Effective Light Directed Assembly of Building Blocks with Microscale Control”, has received widespread interest from the 3D printing industry. The team demonstrated a high-throughput light-directed assembly as a printing technology by introducing gold nanorods to induce thermal convection flows that move microparticles (diameter = 40 μm to several hundreds of micrometers) to specific light-guided locations, forming desired patterns. This allowed for precise control of the internal structure, highly desirable for bioprinting, tissue engineering, and advanced manufacturing.
The work has been shortlisted (4 from ~600) for the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) innovation award. Chia-Hung Chen is going to present this work in Reno, USA in October.
