Depression in entrepreneurs

  • August 01, 2018

In the highly competitive world of startups, the prevalence of depression among company founders is around three times higher than the general population – sometimes leading to tragic consequences such as suicide.

Consultant psychiatrist and BIGHEART principal investigator A/Prof. Roger Ho was recently interviewed by Tech in Asia about clinical depression in entrepreneurs, and he discussed how certain personality types are more susceptible, and how social stigma surrounding depression in Asia may be discouraging people from seeking medical treatment.

A/Prof. Ho also explained the biological basis behind depression and how his research at BIGHEART to validate quantitative depression diagnosis using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) brain imaging – which is non-invasive, painless and cost-effective – is a potential game-changer to eliminate the stigma by showing patients that depression is biological.
