Sweat pH sensor for health monitoring using existing smartwatches

  • January 13, 2020

A research team led by Asst Prof Shao Huilin from iHealthtech and Prof Peh Li-Shiuan from NUS School of Computing has developed a sweat pH sensor system called pH Watch that can be integrated into existing smartwatches and fitness trackers to provide additional health information such as the hydration level of the user.

The pH sensor material does not need a power source, is reusable, washable and suitable for daily use up to a year. It uses the existing pulse oximeter in smartwatches to simultaneously monitor a user’s heart rate, blood oxygen level and sweat pH value.

The team is working on sensors that can detect other molecular biomarkers to extend the health monitoring capabilities of existing fitness wearables.
