Highlights from the NUS-THU Joint Biomedical Engineering Workshop 2023: Inspiring Insights and Commitment to Patient-Centric Innovation
- October 04, 2023
The two-day NUS – THU Joint Workshop on Biomedical Engineering 2023, on 2 & 3 October, has brought together world-leading experts, innovators and physicians from the National University of Singapore (NUS), National University Hospital (NUH), Tsinghua University (THU), Tsinghua Medicine and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
While the NUS-THU Joint Workshop has drawn to a close, it has left us with a treasure trove of valuable insights to ponder. Here are the key takeaways from this two-day event:
1. Focus on Patient-Centric Innovation: One of the standout moments was Prof Hanry Yu’s advice to young scientists and clinicians about the importance of developing technology that genuinely benefits patients. This message serves as a poignant reminder that our innovations should always aim to improve the lives of those we serve.
2. Persistence and Resilience: Prof Lawrence Ho’s story of overcoming obstacles and reluctance from grant organizations to fund his revolutionary surgical robot technology was truly inspiring. It demonstrates the power of persistence and resilience in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in healthcare.
3. Balancing Roles: Prof Ho’s example also highlights the multifaceted roles of clinicians, scientists, and inventors. Being able to wear these hats effectively and consistently prioritise patient well-being in pursuing health technology innovation is a commendable quality.
4. Collaboration for a Better Healthcare System: Professors Wong Tien Yin and Lim Chwee Teck, the workshop organisers, have a shared vision of educating clinicians, scientists and engineers to work collaboratively. Their goal is to foster a healthcare ecosystem that continually improves, with a strong focus on the well-being and needs of patients.
These takeaways serve as a guiding light for all those involved in the field of health technology and underscore the ultimate goal of improving patient care.
The organisers would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the keynote and invited speakers of the workshop for generously sharing their knowledge, which undoubtedly holds the potential to shape the future of healthcare.
We trust that our workshop participants have found immense value in their interactions with the workshop speakers and have established valuable connections that will further enhance their work in health technology.
A big thank you to our sponsors: GenScript, Gaia Science Pte Ltd, Merck Group, Leica Microsystems, and NovogeneAIT Genomics. We sincerely appreciate your support in helping us realise our vision for a brighter and more innovative future in healthcare.
